ADRIAN, Mich. - The Saint Mary's College escaped with a 74-69 win over Adrian College to remain undefeated in conference play this season.
With the Bulldogs holding a one point 24-23 lead with 4:19 left in the first half, the Belles used strong free throw shooting and a pair of baskets to regain the lead and take a 37-30 advantage into the halftime break.
In the second half, the Bulldogs cut the Saint Mary’s lead to as little as one point midway through the half, but the Belles were able to respond with strong play in the paint and beyond the arc to build a nine point lead with just over five minutes to play.
The lead was far from safe down the stretch. Anita Stamps converted a three point play with 57 seconds left in regulation to cut the Saint Mary’s lead to one point again with the score standing at 70-69.
Thanks to solid defense by the Belles, the Bulldogs turned the ball over on their next possession when they had the chance to regain the lead for the first time since the 4:19 mark in the first half.
Forced to foul the Belles on their next possession to stop the clock, the Bulldogs sent Liz Wade to the line with 23 seconds left in the half. The sophomore guard converted both of her free throws to put the Belles up 72-69. With another defensive stand, Saint Mary’s forced another Bulldog turnover and Nicole Beier made both of her free throws with 10 seconds left to lift the Belles to the 74-69 win.
Patsy Mahoney led the Belles with 17 points and five assists. Erin Newsom pitched in 15 points, surpassing the 1,000 career point plateau, and added eight boards in the win. Nicole Beier rounded out the double-digit scoring efforts with 14 points.
