Box Score (pdf)

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College basketball suffered their first MIAA loss of the season to visiting Albion College by a 77-72 score on Wednesday night.

The Brits took control of a closely played first half when they used a 14-4 run to build a nine point lead with 3:14 remaining in the first half.  With a pair of layups late in the half by Meghan Conaty and Erin Newsom, the Belles cut the Albion lead to six as the teams went to the locker rooms for halftime.

After a three pointer two and a half minutes into the second half put Albion up by nine again (46-37), the Belles went on a run of their own to take a 48-47 lead with 13:40 left on the clock.  Albion, however, would regain the lead on their next possession and would not trail again for the remainder of the game.

The charity stripe played a big difference in the outcome of the game.  The Brits went 20-of-24 from the free throw line for an 83.3%.  The Belles, meanwhile, were 12-of-20 (60.0%) in the contest.

Erin Newsom led the offense for the Belles with 18 points while also adding eight rebounds.  Patsy Mahoney had 16 on a 6-of-9 shooting day.  Kelley Murphy (13 points) and Nicole Beier (11) were the other double-digit scorers for the Belles in the loss.

The Belles (8-7, 6-1 MIAA) sit half of a game ahead of Hope (5-1 MIAA) in the league standings and will return to action next Wednesday as they travel to Kalamazoo for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against the Hornets.
