Knights Bow to Belles for First Time Ever

Box Score (pdf)

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - For the first time in school history, the Saint Mary's College basketball team defeated Calvin College by a 79-74 score on Saturday afternoon.

The Belles stormed out to a 5-0 lead on a jumper in the paint by Katie Rashid and a three point basket by Erin Newsom less than 1:30 into the contest.  The Knights then responded with a 9-0 run to take a four point lead at the 15:19 mark.  Saint Mary's was determined to break through against Calvin, however, and took control of much of the remainder of the first half to build as much as an eight point lead.  A run by the Knights that was capped off by a buzzer-beating three pointer at the half saw the game knotted at 37-37 at the break.

Calvin took a lead at the start of the second half by capitalizing on a pair of offensive rebounds and a steal by Marcia Harris.  With 15:07 to go, Rashid hit a three pointer to put the Belles up for good.  The Knights would get within a point a pair of times down the stretch, but would not be able to regain the lead.  Long range shooting proved to play a big part in the outcome of the game as the Belles shot a season-best 8-for-12 (66.7%) from behind the arc while the Knights struggled (3-for-13, 18.8%).

Erin Newsom led the balanced offensive attack for the Belles with 18 points while also adding nine rebounds.  Patsy Mahoney had a 10 point performance as nine different Belles each scored at least five points.

The win breaks a 29 game losing streak the Belles had entering the game against the Knights, who had received votes in both of the most recent and USA Today/ESPN Division III Top 25 polls.

NOTE:  Before the game, the Saint Mary's College Athletic Department retired the #22 jersey of 2008 graduate Alison Kessler.  The LaPorte, Indiana native had set nine school and MIAA records, including the school record for career points (1,628) and MIAA career points (1,051).
