Belles Fall to #21 Maroons

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's basketball team fell to the #21 University of Chicago Maroons 73-64 in both teams' second game of the 2008 Saint Mary's College Thanksgiving Classic.
Both teams played a close first half until Chicago used a big run to take a commanding lead. The game was tied 15-15 with 10:18 left in the first half, but the Maroons outscored the Belles 17-4 over the next 6:50 to go up 32-19 with 3:28 left before the half.
In the second half, the Belles looked to get some momentum going and cut the Maroon lead to 39-34 less than three minutes after the halftime break. Each time the Belles started a run, however, the Maroons responded with a shot of their own as Chicago took the 73-64 win.
Erin Newsom had a solid day for Saint Mary's as she scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Classmate Nicole Beier continued her impressive play of the weekend by adding a career-high 20 points on the day, which included a perfect 6-for-6 effort from the charity stripe. Freshman Patsy Mahoney added 11 points in the loss for the Belles.
Beier, who led Saint Mary's with 32 points on the weekend, was named to the All-Classic Team. It is the first all-tournament or all-classic honor of her career.
