SMC vs. Ohio Wesleyan

Belles Pick Up First Win of Season

Box Score (pdf)

ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Saint Mary's College basketball team won their season opener over Ohio Wesleyan 70-60 at the Anderson University Tip-Off Tournament.

After trailing the Battling Bishops 34-33 at the half, the Belles outscored OWU 37-26 in the second half to take the victory.  The Belles wasted little time erasing the Battling Bishops' one-point lead in the second half.  Erin Newsom grabbed an offensive rebound less than a minute into the half and was fouled while shooting.  The senior nailed both free throws to give Saint Mary's the lead for good.

The Belles used a 9-0 run from the 13:32 mark to 11:03 to push their lead to 11.  Ohio Wesleyan would come back to cut the lead to just one point, but Saint Mary's scored eight unanswered points in the final 2:14 of the game to claim the 70-60 win.

Freshman Maggie Ronan led the Belles with 15 points in her collegiate debut. Nicole Beier had 13 points and two blocked shots off of the bench. Newsom added 11 points and eight rebounds for Saint Mary's in the win.  Anna Kammrath had a game-high 12 rebounds while chipping in nine points of her own.

The Belles will face Robert Morris College (Ill.) at 4:00 p.m. tomorrow at Anderson for the tournament championship.
