Belles Claim First MIAA Victory of Season

NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Saint Mary's College basketball team took an 80-72 decision from Trine University in the MIAA opener for both teams at Angela Athletic Facility on Wednesday night.
The Belles used a 14-5 run midway through the first half to establish a 10 point lead 2:47 before the half. Saint Mary's would take a 39-32 lead to the locker room at the half.
After the break, the Thunder tied the contest at 41-41 less than three minutes into the half on a three-pointer by Liz Gehrig. Over the next nine minutes, however, the Belles re-established their lead by going up 66-51 with 8:52 to play. Down the stretch, the Thunder would not get within seven points of the Belles as Saint Mary's won by the 80-72 final.
Erin Newsom had a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Anna Kammrath also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Belles. It was Kammrath's second double-double of the year.
The Belles were an impressive 30-for-52 from the floor in the contest. The 57.7% field goal percentage marks the highest percentage for a team in a game under Coach Jenn Henley at Saint Mary's. The last time a Belles basketball team shot above 55.0% was on January 14, 2006 when Saint Mary's was 31-for-55 from the floor for a 56.4% average against Kalamazoo College. It was also the first time since the 2002-03 campaign that the Belles were victorious in their MIAA opener.
