SMC at MIAA NCAA Qualifier Round Three
Belles Clinch NCAA Championship Berth
MARSHALL, Mich. - For the fourth time in program history, the Saint Mary's College golf team will be competing at the NCAA Division III Championships.
Entering the third of three 18 hole rounds to determine the conference's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament, the Belles held onto a 14 stroke lead over fall champion Olivet. On day three, the Comets shot the low round of 331, but the 334 put up by Saint Mary's was more than enough to clinch the automatic qualifier and punch the Belles' ticket for the Championships, which will be held in Port St. Lucie, Florida from May 13 to 16.
All five scoring golfers for the Belles shot within four strokes of one another for one of the best overall team efforts this spring by Saint Mary's. Emily Gore continued a strong spring season by leading the Belles with an 82 for fourth place overall. Meredith Fantom finished the day with an 83 for a share of fifth place. Right behind the senior co-captain was freshman Natalie Matuszak, who carded an 84 for Saint Mary's, which was good enough for a share of seventh.
Mary Kate Boyce was one stroke behind Matuszak with an 85, putting her in a tie for ninth place on the day. Wrapping up the scoring five was Rosie O'Connor, who shot an 86 to tie for 11th overall.
Perri Hamma, who played as an individual, shot an 85 to lead the pack of individual players and tie for ninth with teammate Mary Kate Boyce.
The remainder of the field of the 2009 NCAA Championships will be announced later this weekend.
