SMC at MIAA NCAA Qualifier Round One
Belles Set Pace at First Round of Qualifier
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College golf team came out with something to prove in the first of three rounds played by MIAA teams this spring to determine the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA DIII Championships as the Belles led the field with a 325 at Blackthorn Golf Club.
The #21 ranked Belles did not have a scoring golfer finish below eighth on the day to edge #11 Olivet by 13 strokes. Sophomore Emily Gore led all golfers with a four over 77, which included an eagle on the sixth hole. Classmate Mary Kate Boyce finished in a tie for second on the day with an 80.
Rosie O'Connor was the third scoring Belle with an 83 to finish alone in fourth place. Natalie Matuszak was just two shots behind O'Connor for an 85 to finish in a tie for sixth. Rounding out the scoring for the Belles was Meredith Fantom with an 86 to tie for eighth.
Perri Hamma, Christine Brown, and Michelle Hird all played as individuals for the Belles. Hamma shot an 86 to tie for eighth place overall. Brown fired an 88 to tie for 12th while Hird shot a 91 to tie for 21st.
Since the Belles finished the fall season in second place, they earned the right to host the first of three rounds played by the conference this spring. Fall champion Olivet will host the second and third rounds later this month. The team with the lowest combined three rounds will then go on to represent the MIAA with the conference's automatic qualifier at the NCAA Division III Championships played in Port St. Lucie, Florida in May.
