Youth is Served at Day One of MIAA Championships
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College swimming and diving team is currently in fifth place with 118 points after day one at the MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by the College at the University of Notre Dame.
Of the six events taking place on Thursday, the Belles set new school records in five of those events. Of those five new records, the three individual swimming events all saw freshmen set a new standard for swimming at Saint Mary's.
The 200 yard freestyle relay got things rolling in the first event with a time of 1:40.38, which was more than two seconds better than the old record set six years ago. Eva Cavadini then chimed in with a record-breaking performance in the 500 freestyle. Her time of 5:11.08 was 2.74 better than one of the oldest school records set by Alison Smith.
In the consolation of the 200 individual medley, Audrey Dalrymple set her second school record of the season with a time of 2:12.68. Not to be out-done, Barbara Beidler had a stellar day in the 50 freestyle. The freshman set a new school record in the preliminary round with a 25.04 and then proceeded to break her own record in the evening session with a time of 24.90.
In the evening's final event for the women, the Belles left the pool with a big splash by finishing the 400 medley relay in a school-record 4:00.11, just missing a "B" cut by .28 of a second, to finish third overall and medal in the event. The relay was more than 10 seconds better than the previous record.
