Belles Finish Fourth at Hokum Karem Race

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- The Saint Mary's College cross country team opened up the 2008 season on Saturday with a fourth place finish at the Hokum Karem Race hosted by Wabash College, edging out NCAA Division II University of Indianapolis by four points.

In the relay-format race, each team split their runners into two person scoring tandems.  Scores were based on the top three finishing pairs. 

The Belles were led by the duo of junior Megan McClowry and freshman Arianne Rodriguez, who finished 10th overall with a time of 23:45.  Caitlin Brodmerkel and Joanne Almond were the next pair to cross the finish line for the Belles in a time of 24:44 for 19th overall and the 14th scoring group to finish.  Just behind Brodmerkel and Almond were Caite Salyer and Clare McVey with a time of 24:56.  With the ninth, 14th, and 15th place scoring finishes, the Belles scored a 38.

NAIA team Indiana Tech claimed the victory in the eight team field with the first, third, and sixth place finishes for a score of 10. 

The Belles will travel to the Bradley Invitational in Peoria, Ill. next Friday, September 12.  The race is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. (CT).
