Belles Finish Ninth at Ferris State Bulldog Invitational
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Belles' golf team shot a 334 in the second round of the Ferris State Bulldog Invitational on Sunday to finish ninth in the field of 16 teams with a two round total of 671.
Natalie Matuszak turned in an impressive first weekend in her collegiate debut with the Belles. The freshman carded an 80 on Sunday for a 158 on the weekend, which tied her for 21st place overall. Matuszak also had the highest individual finish among NCAA Division III golfers in the field of Division II and III squads.
Freshmen Christine Brown, Kailey Jacob, and Laura L'Abbe also had impressive days for the Belles in their tournment debuts. Brown turned in a round of 83 for the Belles while Jacob and L'Abbe both shot rounds of 84 on Sunday.
Division II Grand Valley State claimed the tournament championship and individual medalist honors. The Lakers shot a 594 to be the only team in the field to finish below 600. GVSU golfer Ashley Smith was the medalist as she shot rounds of 70 and 74 to finish even for the tournament at 144.
The Belles will travel to defending MIAA champion Olivet College on Thursday, September 4 for the opening round of MIAA play. The MIAA round will take place at the Medalist Golf Course in Olivet, Mich. and is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
