SMC vs. Hope
Late Goals Leave Belles Short Against Hope
NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- In a non-conference match-up between Saint Mary's and Hope College, the Flying Dutch scored two goals deep into the second half to defeat the Belles 2-1.
In a tightly played first half, neither team was able to find the back of the net as Patty Duffy and Kelsey Bos, the goalkeepers of the game, both stood their ground.
The Belles took little time in the second half to get on the scoreboard. Julie Hamilton set up Lauren Hinton by playing the ball across the field and over a pair of defenders, leading Hinton into the 18 yard box. Hinton scooped up the pass and beat the Flying Dutch goalkeeper high to score her second goal of the season in the 51st minute of play.
The solid Belles' defense came up with some key plays to keep the 1-0 advantage, including a Patty Duffy save on a shot from within six yards of the goal.
The Flying Dutch, however, were persistent throughout the second half as they out-shot the Belles 15-4 in the second 45 minutes of play. The visitors scored goals in the 83rd and 89th minute to take the 2-1 win.
The Belles (1-4-1) will have nine days away from competition before traveling to Olivet College on September 27 to open up the MIAA portion of their schedule with a noon showdown with the Comets.
