Belles Open Season with Sweep at Thomas More Invitational
CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- The Saint Mary's College volleyball team opened up the 2008 campaign on Saturday with a pair of victories at the Thomas More Invitational.
In game one, the Belles defeated Spalding University in four sets (25-23, 23-25, 26-24, 25-20). In the nightcap, the Belles wasted little time disposing of Earlham College in straight sets (25-17, 25-14, 25-13).
Cathy Kurczak (16 kills), Kaela Hellmann (24), and Lorna Slupczynski (21) led the Belles' offensive attack on the day. Danie Brink had 38 assists for Saint Mary's while Liana Rohr chipped in 28 assists of her own. On the defensive end, Meg Rose led all Belles with 29 digs, and Ellen Huelsmann had a double-digit dig effort with 15.
The Belles (2-0) will look to keep the momentum going in day two at the Thomas More Invitational as they face Penn State - Behrend and Kenyon College on Sunday morning at 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., respectively.
