Thomas More Invitational (Day Two)

Sunday Split for Belles in Day Two at Thomas More Invitational

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. -- After dropping an early morning contest with Penn State - Behrend, the Saint Mary's volleyball team wasted little time turning things around to pick up a decisive win over Kenyon College on the second day of the Thomas More Invitational.

The Belles suffered their first loss of the 2008 season against the Lions in five sets (25-22, 21-25, 25-21, 16-25, 13-15).  Head coach Julie Schroeder-Biek and company quickly turned things around for their final game of the tournament as they handed Kenyon a quick loss in straight sets (25-11, 25-20, 25-2).

Danie Brink and Liana Rohr continued to effectively run the Belles' offense.  Brink finished the weekend with 85 assists and 13 kills, while Rohr had 58 assists and 23 digs.

Kaela Hellmann, Lorna Slupczynski, and Cathy Kurczak showed their leadership on the floor by being strong components to the offensive attack all weekend.  Hellmann wrapped up the weekend with 44 kills, 24 digs, and eight service aces.  Slupczynski added 40 kills, 26 digs, and four aces of her own.  Kurczak had a highly-effective weekend, tallying 29 kills while having a .441 hitting percentage performance in the two-day tournament.

Meg Rose and Ellen Huelsmann showed a strong Belles back court as the pair had 62 and 37 digs respectively.

After the conclusion of the tournament, Cathy Kurczak and Lorna Slupczynski were named to the All-Tournament Team.  They were among eight players from the seven teams playing in the tournament to earn the honor.

The Belles will open up the MIAA portion of their schedule on Tuesday, September 2 when they host the Adrian College Bulldogs at Angela Athletic Facility.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
