ADRIAN, Mich. - The Saint Mary's softball team suffered a pair of MIAA losses to Adrian by 4-3 and 12-4 scores on Saturday.

The Bulldogs scored all four of their runs in the first two innings of game one, including a three run home run to take a 4-0 lead through two complete.

The game remained 4-0 in favor of Adrian until the top of the seventh inning. With one away in the Saint Mary’s half of the inning, Hayley Bojorquez hit a double to left field to get the rally going for the Belles. After a fly out to left field, Katie Rashid came up and laced a single into the outfield. Cathy Kurczak then followed Rashid by putting the ball in play to the Adrian shortstop, whose throw was off the mark and allowed Bojorquez and Rashid to both score on the play to cut the lead to 4-2. Lauren Enayati punched the ball into play and drew another Adrian miscue, which allowed Kurczak to score to cut the lead to one run. Kristen Nelson then had a hard-hit infield single to keep the comeback hopes alive for Saint Mary’s. The Belles’ rally, however, fell short as Saint Mary’s dropped the opening game of the doubleheader by a 4-3 score.

Monica Palicki shouldered the loss in the circle for the Belles, allowing six hits in six innings of work while striking out a pair.

Nelson helped pace the Belles offense with her fifth multi-hit performance of the season, going 2-for-4 with a pair of singles.

In game two, the Belles came out and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Lindsey Thielmann drew a lead-off walk, and Hayley Bojorquez followed her up with a single. Two batters later, Katie Rashid added another single to load the bases for the Belles. Lauren Enayati then picked up the third single of the inning to drive in Thielmann for the game’s first run.

Adrian responded with four runs in the top half of the third to give the Bulldogs a 4-1 lead.

The Belles added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Thielmann scored again on a single to right field by Kate Mitchell, cutting the score to 4-2 in favor of Adrian.

The Bulldogs, however, scored eight unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a 12-2 lead into the bottom half of the sixth. Saint Mary’s would not go down without a fight in their offensive half of the inning. Cathy Kurczak started off the inning with a bunt single. Lauren Enayati then picked up her second RBI of the game on a double to left field. Two batters later, Ashley Peterson lined a double to the right center gap to plate Enayati to make the game 12-4. Once again, however, the rally fell short and the Belles fell 12-4 in six innings.

Angela Gillis suffered her fourth loss on the season on the mound for the Belles.

Lauren Enayati and Ashley Peterson led the way on offense in game two for Saint Mary’s as both outfielders went 3-for-4 at the dish. Enayati added a pair of RBIs and scored a run while Peterson drove in her team-leading 28th run of the season. Hayley Bojorquez and Cathy Kurczak each added a pair of hits in the loss for the Belles, including a double by Bojorquez.

The Belles return to Saint Mary’s for their final home doubleheader of the season on Sunday. Senior Day festivities for the three seniors on the team will begin before game one. The first pitch of the doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
