Belles Open Season with Victories
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Mary's College softball team opened up the 2009 season with a pair of wins on their spring trip to Florida.
In the first game of the day, the Belles emerged victorious in a tight 3-2 battle over Drew University (N.J.). Junior Maureen Healy went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Healy also scored the game-winning run on a single by classmate Ashley Peterson. Angela Gillis earned the win in the circle for the Belles in her first collegiate game. The freshman struck out five and did not allow a walk in the complete game effort.
In the afternoon game against Wheaton College (Mass.), Peterson and senior Ashley Fusaro hit back-to-back home runs to lift Saint Mary's to a 5-2 win. The pair finished the game with multi-hit efforts as Peterson went 2-for-4 and Fusaro went 2-for-3 at the dish. Cathy Kurczak aided in the offensive efforts of the Belles by going 1-for-2 with a double and a sacrifice fly. Fusaro also had an impressive game behind the plate as she threw out the only two steal attempts of the game at second. Monica Palicki picked up her first collegiate pitching win in her first appearance by scattering six hits over seven innings and striking out four.
The Belles will take on Worchester Polytechnic Institute (Mass.) and Wheelock (Mass.) in Fort Myers, Fla. tomorrow morning.
