Belles Beat Blazers, Fall to Engineers

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Mary's College softball team picked up their seventh win of the season before suffering their first loss of the 2009 campaign on Wednesday.

In a 3-1 win over Elms (Mass.), Lauren Enayati led the way with a 3-for-4 performance.  Maureen Healy and Ashley Peterson each went 2-for-3 at the plate.  Meanwhile, Ashley Fusaro went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI in the win.  Angela Gillis earned her fourth win from the circle for the Belles by allowing just three hits and striking out five in seven innings of work.

The Belles dropped their first contest of the season to Rensseelaer Polytechnic Institute (N.Y.) by a 14-4 margin.  Peterson continued her strong start to the year with a 4-for-4 offensive effort with a double and a triple while scoring a pair of runs.  Fusaro also had an impressive game two, hitting 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in the loss.  Cathy Kurczak added a triple and an RBI for the Belles.  Monica Palicki suffered the loss in the circle, moving her record to 3-1.

Off to one of the best starts in school history, the Belles (7-1) will wrap up their spring trip to the Gene Cusic Classic on Thursday morning when they face Curry (Mass.) and Bowdoin (Maine).
