Offense Quieted as Belles Fall to Flying Dutch
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College softball team was held to just two runs as the Belles fell in a pair of MIAA games to Hope College by 7-0 and 6-2 scores.
In game one, the Flying Dutch hit a pair of home runs in the third inning, including a grand slam, to take a 6-0 lead after two and a half innings. Hope added their seventh run in the sixth inning on a single up the middle.
Kristen Nelson collected a pair of hits, including a double, for the Belles in the loss.
The Flying Dutch got on the scoreboard early, scoring three runs in the first and two runs in the second to get a quick 5-0.
The Belles responded in the top of the third inning when Katie Rashid led off the inning with a solo home run over the left field fence. An inning later, Ashley Peterson led off the fourth with a single up the middle. After advancing to second on a passed ball, Peterson scored on a single by Hayley Bojorquez to cut the Hope lead to 5-2.
Hope, however, added a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the 6-2 decision.
Lauren Enayati had a pair of singles in game two for Saint Mary's in addition to Rashid's seventh career home run to help the offensive efforts.
Angela Gillis suffered both losses on the mound for the Belles.
Saint Mary's (22-6, 6-4 MIAA) will next travel to Adrian for an MIAA doubleheader with the Bulldogs beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
