Reflections for the Lenten Season

Dying Leads to Life

John 11:1-45 (pdf)

We are drawing closer to the end of this year’s Lenten season and perhaps we should assess how this time has been for us. In the words of Jesus in today’s Gospel, “I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” Simply said, John implies that death leads to new life, to glory. Lent helps us in this life process. Life will come to an end but as believing Christians we know there is life hereafter.

In our day to day lives, God’s Spirit invites us to let go. To let go of material possessions that clog our life, to let go of our ways of thinking and doing things, as the only way. I was recently reminded of this, thanks to my very curious and energetic two year old daughter, Lucy. People have said two is a hard age, but I just thought there are way too many meltdowns and impatience on both of our parts. It would just take one look from me in my impatience and Lucy would be on the verge of tears. When I reflected back on these moments, I realized all Lucy wanted was my attention. She wasn’t trying to be naughty or make me upset. I have learned to put the cell phone, the ipad, the to-do-list, the impatience and the pressure aside. Life is temporary. Rather than maneuver life according to our desires, let us let go and become receivers in a way that reflects our beliefs as Christians. I have become a better mother because I was able to let go and become available to love and be loved. May the words of Jesus guide and support you on your Lenten journey.

Peace and Blessings
