Reflections for the Lenten Season

Always Use Compassion

John 8:1-11 (pdf)

Sister Madeleva

Lenten season is a time to reflect on oneself and how one is spiritually strengthening her life from day to day. The Gospel according to John opened my eyes to my own faults and judgments. Humans are basically flawed. It can be difficult nowadays to stray away from our human tendency to judge others. When I turn on the TV after a long day of classes or student teaching the media is serving judgments on a silver platter.

In this passage Jesus spoke the powerful words:

“Let the one among you who is without sin
be the first to throw a stone at her.”

The people who were ready to stone the woman examined their consciences and realized they themselves are not without sin. Even Jesus, the one who is without sin, does not condemn this woman. Learning from Jesus, we should always use compassion with those who commit sin because we are all sinners.

As I move towards the end of the Lenten season I strive to better my spiritual relationship with Christ. In his mercy we are forgiven of our sins. I found myself reflecting on a few questions after I read this passage: Have I myself passed judgment on others? Have I followed the commandants? Have I been living a life as Christ lived his?

We do not need to fall into the temptations of the media and the surrounding world. We are being challenged to live our lives as Jesus did and forgive others and ourselves of our transgressions. Now is the time to follow the words of Jesus:

“Go, and from now on do not sin.”
