Saint Mary’s Rallies to Down Anderson, 72-69
NOTRE DAME, IN – Alison Kessler pumped in 26 points while Bridget Lipke scored a career high 20 in leading Saint Mary’s to a 72-69 non-conference win over Anderson Monday evening at Angela Athletic Center.
The win ups the Belles record to 1-2 while Anderson falls to 1-2. It was also the first win at Saint Mary’s for new head coach Jenn Henley.
Neither team held a lead larger than six points in opening frame as the Ravens held a 34-28 edge at halftime. Anderson held their biggest lead of the night at 39-30 with 17:46 remaining in the contest. The Belles chipped away and took their first lead of second half at 50-49 with 12:20 left in the game.
Eventually Saint Mary’s upped their lead to 60-54 with 7:36 left in the contest. However the Ravens rallied with a 13-4 scoring spurt over the next 4:20 to go up 67-64 with 3:16 remaining. Neither team could convert for over the next two minutes until Kessler nailed a three-pointer with 1:12 left to knot the score at 67-67.
A Stacie Jennings lay-up on Anderson’s ensuing possession put the Ravens up with 55 seconds left. Kessler converted on a three-point play with 41 seconds left to put the Belles up 70-69. With 10 seconds left, Mandy Seward missed a jumper on Anderson’s last possession as Saint Mary’s was able to rush the ball up the court and avoid a foul before Erin Newsom sealed the win with a lay-up at the buzzer.
In addition to Kessler’s and Lipke’s effort, Newsom rounded out the double figure scorers for the Belles with 10.
Melenda Hawthorne scored a team high 18 points to Anderson. Tiffany Bowsher and Jennings each scored 13 for the Ravens.
