Saint Mary’s Falls to Wisconsin-Whitewater in OT, 70-67
WHEATON, IL – In the consolation game of the Lee Pfund Classic hosted by Wheaton College, Wisconsin-Whitewater knock off Saint Mary’s 70-67 in overtime Saturday afternoon.
The win evens Wisconsin-Whitewaters to 1-1 while the Belles fall to 0-2.
In a game that featured 13 ties and neither team held a lead larger than six points the Warhawks held a 50-44 edge with 6:37 left in the contest after a Tiffany Morton lay-up. Saint Mary’s chipped away with a 10-2 run and took the lead on an Erin Newsom lay-up with 3:13 remaining.
Alison Kessler put the Belles in front 58-56 on a pair of foul shots with 47 seconds remaining. However the Warhawks responded with two free throws by Lindsey Buechner with 28 seconds left. An offensive foul by Anna Kamrath turned the ball back over to Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saint Mary’s ensuing possession. Buechner nailed a jumper to put the Warhawks up 60-58 with five seconds remaining. A Kessler jumper at the buzzer forced overtime.
A Bridget Lipke jumper with 2:21 left in overtime gave Saint Mary’s a 65-64 edge. However, Megan Schmidt responded on the Warhawks next possession with a lay-up to give Wisconsin-Whitewater a 66-65 lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Sarah Moran pushed the Warhawks lead to 70-67 on a pair of foul shots with 15 seconds remaining. Saint Mary’s had two three point attempts in the final moments but neither Kessler nor Lipke could connect.
Kessler had a game high 22 points to lead the Belles attack while Lipke also posted a game with double digit points adding 15.
For her efforts during the event, Kessler was named to the all-tournament team.
