#5 Hope Ends Saint Mary's Season
HOLLAND, MI – Ellen Wood scored a season high 23 points while grabbing 10 rebounds in leading Hope to a 71-52 win over Saint Mary’s in the semifinals of the MIAA tournament Thursday evening at the Devos Fieldhouse.
The win lifts Hope’s record to 22-3 while the Belles end their season with a 12-13 mark.
In the opening half the Flying Dutch held the biggest lead of the first period when they held a 27-20 advantage with 4:00 minutes left in the half. But in a half featuring a combined 21 turnovers, Hope committed six more down the stretch and didn’t hit another field goal as Saint Mary’s got within 28-24 at intermission.
The Belles opened the second half by going on a 9-4 scoring spurt in taking a 33-32 lead with 15:30 left in the contest. However, Hope responded by scoring 26 of the game’s next 32 points ending with a Jordyn Boles lay-up with 8:01 left in the contest.
Saint Mary’s couldn’t get their deficit below 14 points the rest of the way as Hope advanced to the MIAA Championship game against Calvin on Saturday evening.
Hope posted a 43-23 rebounding edge as they outscored Saint Mary’s 25-4 in second chance points.
Alison Kessler and Erin Newsom each scored a team high 13 points to lead the Belles efforts. Bridget Lipke posted 11 points and six assists in her final game.
