SMC vs. Calvin
Belles Fall to #19 Knights
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's basketball team fell by a 64-58 score to #19 ranked Calvin on Friday night in MIAA play.
The Knights had a notion of pay-back on their minds on Friday night after the Belles won all three contests between the the schools last season for the first time in program history. The two teams traded blows in the first half as the first 20 minutes saw four ties and seven lead changes between the two squads. The Knights took a seven-point lead just under the nine minute mark in the first half.
The Belles, however, used a 9-0 run to erase the deficit and gain a 25-23 lead with 5:37 to go in the half. Saint Mary's was able to gain a four-point lead with less than 3:30 to go before the half, but then the Knights outscored the Belles 9-4 through the end of the half to take a one-point lead at the break.
In spite of the Belles getting more looks at the basket than Calvin (39 to 12 FGA - 2nd half), the Knights would not give up their lead in the second half as they dealt the Belles their first MIAA loss of the season.
Leading the way for the Belles on Friday night was sophomore Kelley Murphy, who had her second career double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Anna Kammrath and Jessica Centa each chipped in eight points of their own Friday night.
The Belles will not have a lot of turn-around time before their next MIAA game as they host Alma College tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. at Angela Athletic Facility.
