SMC vs. Anderson

Belles Open Season on High Note Against Ravens

Box Score

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's College basketball team opened the 2009-10 campaign with their biggest margin of victory since 2007 with a 72-33 win over visiting Anderson University on Tuesday night.

The 29 point margin of victory is the biggest margin of victory since Saint Mary's defeated Notre Dame (Maryland) by 48 points in 2007.  Moreover, the 33 points allowed by the Belles is the lowest total amount of points allowed since the Belles' 72-26 win against Andrews University on December 3, 2003 at Angela Athletic Facility.

In a game where the Belles outscored the Ravens in every specialty category, the biggest difference in the game was Saint Mary's 34 points off of turnovers to Anderson's eight as the two teams combined for 55 turnovers (AU-35; SMC-20).

The Belles gained an early lead that they never gave up throughout the game.  Anderson got within four points of the Belles midway through the first half, but Saint Mary's went on to out-score the Ravens 24-11 over the rest of the first half to put the game out of reach.

Saint Mary's was led by an offense that saw eight different players score with three Belles hitting double-digits.  Patsy Mahoney led all players with 18 points on the night, which included a 9-of-10 performance from the charity stripe.  Fellow sophomores Katie Sullivan and Jessica Centa both added 12 points in the win.

The Belles (1-0) will travel to the Bluffton University Tip Off Tournament this weekend where they will face Wheaton (Ill.) on Friday, November 20 at 5:00 p.m.
