SMC vs. Calvin
Belles Bow to Knights
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's basketball team was defeated by #10 Calvin on Wednesday night by a 67-57 score.
The Knights gained control of the game early by turning a four-point deficit into an eight-point lead just 6:20 into the game for a 14-6 advantage. The Belles were able to get within five points of the visiting Knights on a three-pointer by Patsy Mahoney with 12:34 to go in the first half. Calvin, however, was able to respond each time the Belles tried to make a run at the lead and maintained at least a six-point cushion throughout the remainder of the half.
After the two teams traded baskets to open the second half, the Belles chipped away at Calvin's lead with a 9-2 run to put the score at 40-38 in favor of the Knights. Saint Mary's, however, would not be able to complete the comeback, and Calvin responded with a 13-1 run over a 5:10 in the half to put the game away. Saint Mary's would get within eight points of the Knights three times down the stretch, but Calvin maintained a double-digit lead for most of the final eight minutes of the game as they took the 67-57 decision from the Belles.
The big difference-maker in the game was that Calvin was 13-of-14 from the free throw line (92.9 percent) while the Belles were just 7-of-13 (53.8 percent). Saint Mary's did hold an advantage in steals (15-12) and had fewer turnovers (16-23).
Leading the offensive attack for the Belles in the loss were Anna Kammrath, Kelley Murphy, and Patsy Mahoney. Kammrath had a team-high 14 points while Murphy and Mahoney each chipped in 10 points of their own. Liz Wade, meanwhile, had a career-high 11 rebounds for the Belles to claim game-high honors. The 11 boards betters her previous career mark of eight rebounds set in December 2008 against Olivet.
Saint Mary's (10-8, 5-5 MIAA) will take to the road on Saturday to face conference opponent Alma at 3:00 p.m.
