SMC vs. Calvin
Belles' Season Comes to End at Calvin
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's basketball team's season came to an end in the semifinals of the MIAA Tournament as #2 seeded and #11 nationally ranked Calvin defeated the Belles 90-71 on Thursday night.
The Belles were able to get out to an early lead in the first quarter as Saint Mary's went up 6-2 on a jumper by Kelley Murphy. After the game was tied 10-10, Calvin used an 11-2 run to go up 21-14. The Belles chipped away at the Knights' lead and got within a point at 28-27 with 6:22 remaining in the first half, but Calvin used another run to go up 40-28 to take control of the game. By the half, the Knights had established a 48-32 lead at the break.
In the second half, Calvin built their lead to as much as 33 points as the Belles would be unable to stage a comeback as they had so many times this season.
Calvin seemed to hit every shot that they took in the game as the Knights were just off of an MIAA Tournament single-game record as they shot 58.5 percent from the floor.
The Saint Mary's offense was balanced as has been the trend this season as four players scored in double-digits on the evening. Anna Kammrath led the Belles in her final game with 18 points and seven rebounds. She ends her career as the all-time leading rebounder in school history with 863 career boards. Kelley Murphy added 14 points as she ended the season having scored double figures in 23 of the team's 27 games. Maggie Ronan and Jessica Centa were sparks off the bench yet again as they each chipped in 12 points of their own. Liz Wade, meanwhile became the first player in school history to amass 100 steals and 100 assists in the same season.
The Belles finish the season with a 15-12 overall record and a 9-7 MIAA record, which was good enough for third place in the league.
