SMC vs. Manchester
Belles Victorious Over Spartans
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's basketball team broke a three-game losing skid against Manchester on Saturday with a 55-41 victory over the visiting Spartans. Previous to Saturday's win, the Belles had not beaten the Spartans since the 2004 season, having lost the prior three meetings.
With the game knotted up at 9-9, the Belles grabbed a hold of the lead for good on a second-chance bucket by Kelley Murphy with 12:50 to go in the first half. Manchester was able to make the game a one-possession situation a few minutes later, but the Belles closed out the half by out-scoring the Spartans 9-3 to take a 26-18 lead at the break.
Once again, the Spartans were able to cut the Belles' lead to a point at 32-31 in the second half. Saint Mary's responded with a 11-2 run capped off by a three-pointer by Liz Wade to put the Belles up by double-digits with 7:43 left in the game. The Belles were able to maintain their double-digit lead for the remainder of the game as they took the 55-41 win.
Kelley Murphy led all scorers with 16 points for her seventh double-digit performance of the season. Anna Kammrath and Grace Sadowski added some career-best performances. Kammrath blew past her previous career high for steals of four as she had nine thefts on the day while adding 10 rebounds. Sadowski, meanwhile, bettered her career best for points as the junior had nine points to be the team's second-highest scorer in the game.
The Belles will take a break for the Christmas holiday and will be in action again right before the new year when they travel to the DePauw University Tournament on December 29 and 30. They will face off against Maryville (Tenn.) in their first of two games in the tournament on December 29 at 4:00 p.m.
