Belles Fall to Brits

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Saint Mary's basketball team's troubles against conference foe Albion continued on Wednesday as the visiting Britons took a 78-64 win over the Belles at Angela Athletic Facility.

The Belles took a 5-2 lead less than a minute and a half into the game, but Albion's Keigan Edwards would hit a pair of three-pointers on back-to-back possessions for the Brits as visiting Albion. The second bucket from outside of the arc would give Albion a 12-9 lead, and the Brits would not trail again for the remainder of the contest.

Albion made more shots from the floor, more three-pointers, and out-scored the Belles in the paint and off of turnovers in the first half to take a 34-28 lead into the break. The second half would look a lot like the first half in those regards as the Brits continued to take advantage of a hot shooting night by hitting 57.7% of their shots in the second half. Saint Mary's out-shot Albion in the second half, but the Belles connected on 37.5% of those shots.

Despite their struggles from the floor, the Belles would not go away in the contest quietly.  Trailing 45-33 in the second half, Saint Mary's scored eight straight points to cut the Brits' lead to 45-43 with 14:00 to go in the contest. After a three-point play by Albion, the Belles responded with a bucket by Maggie Ronan and a pair of free throws by Jessica Centa to get within a point of the Brits at 48-47.  Albion, however, would go on a small scoring spree of their own to go up 62-51 with 8:26 to go. Down the stretch, Saint Mary's would not be able to get within fewer than six points of the Brits as Albion went on to the 78-64 win.

Maggie Ronan was one point off of her career high with a team-best 17 points on the night. Jessica Centa added her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 10 rebounds for the Belles. Patsy Mahoney chipped in 10 points and three assists on the night.

Liz Wade, meanwhile, surpassed the 300 career assist plateau with five dimes on the night.  She is just the fourth player in program history with 300 career assists.


Albion's Keigan Edwards led all scorers with 21 points while Patty Rewa had 20.

The Belles (9-5, 2-3 MIAA) will travel to Adrian College on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. MIAA contest against the Bulldogs.
