SMC vs. Olivet
Belles Hang on to Defeat Comets
OLIVET, Mich. - Patsy Mahoney and Shanlynn Bias scored 17 of their 29 points in the final 6:35 to regain the lead for good for the Belles as the Saint Mary's basketball team held on to defeat Olivet 72-67 on Tuesday.
In a game where neither team had more than an eight-point lead, the Belles and Comets were tied seven times while the lead changed hands 14 times on the night. Olivet saw their largest lead come in the first half when they hit back-to-back three-pointers to go from being down a point to a 23-18 lead with 11:19 to go before the break. Saint Mary's responded with their own scoring spurt to regain the lead and would be up 34-30 at halftime.
The Belles opened up the second half by expanding their lead to eight points at 40-32, which would match Saint Mary's largest lead of the contest. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Comets knotted the game at 40-40 with 13:41 to go. Olivet would regain the lead and go up 49-44 on a pair of free throws midway through the half, but the Belles responded yet again. Patsy Mahoney put Saint Mary's up 50-49 on a jump shot from the floor, and then put the Belles up for good with a pair of free throws at 6:11 to give visiting Saint Mary's a 52-51 edge.
The Belles would go up by as many as eight points (61-53 and 63-55) in the final five minutes of the game. Down the stretch, Mahoney and Kelley Murphy were perfect from the line in the final seconds of the game yet again to wrap up the win for Saint Mary's.
Saint Mary's made more shots from the floor (28 to 25), out-rebounded (37-21), had more steals (12-11), and connected on more free throws (15 to 12) than the Comets. The Belles also dominated the paint better than Olivet, out-scoring the Comets 44-34 in the lane.
Four players scored in double-digits for the Belles on Tuesday evening, led by Kelley Murphy's 24 points and 13 rebounds. Patsy Mahoney had 15 points, Shanlynn Bias scored a new collegiate career-high 14 points, and Jessica Centa added 10 points for Saint Mary's in the team's first MIAA win of the season.
Saint Mary's will return to Angela Athletic Facility for their second home game of the season on Saturday. The Belles will host Alma College beginning at 3:00 p.m.
