SMC vs. George Fox
Belles Come Up Short In Upset Bid
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The Saint Mary's College basketball team's attempt at knocking off the #13 George Fox University Bruins on Tuesday afternoon in the Surf 'N Slam Tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene. The Belles fell 74-64 to the Bruins in Saint Mary's first game of the tournament.
The Bruins came out looking as though they would run away with a win. With a 7-6 George Fox advantage, the Bruins went on a 15-0 run over the next 3:53 to take their largest lead of the contest at 22-6 with 13:42 to go before halftime. George Fox would match that 16-point lead just past the midway point of the half. The Belles would not go quietly in the first half, let alone in the game. Saint Mary's used a 18-4 spurt of their own to get within a bucket of the Bruins with the score at 31-29.
After trailing just 36-31 at the half, the Belles were able to keep within striking distance. The game was just a two-possession contest as Saint Mary's was able to get within three points of the Bruins twice in the second half. George Fox, however, was able to respond each time the Belles looked to erase the lead. Down the stretch, Saint Mary's would not be able to get within fewer than six points as George Fox picked up their eighth win of the season while snapping a two-game winning streak by the Belles.
Free throws were a big reason Saint Mary's was able to stay in the game. The Belles made an impressive 17-of-17 free throws in the second half while connecting on 22-of-24 (91.7%) attempts for the contest to the Bruins' 12-of-20 (60.0%) showing from the charity stripe. George Fox out-scored Saint Mary's 32-14 in the paint as the Bruins' Hannah Munger led all players with 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Kelley Murphy led the way for the Belles as she notched 16 points. Patsy Mahoney was right behind Murphy with 15 points, and Maggie Ronan added 12 points for Saint Mary's in the loss. The trio of Murphy, Mahoney, and Ronan as well as Jessica Centa combined to hit 22-of-22 free throws for the Belles in the game.
The Belles (7-3) will look to get back into the win column tomorrow when they face off against Fairleigh Dickinson - Florham at 5:00 p.m. PDT. The outcome of that game will determine the consolation games of the Surf 'N Slam Tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene.
