Belles Dealt First Loss of Season

Box Score

CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. - The Saint Mary's basketball team suffered their first loss of the 2010-11 campaign on Saturday, falling to Wilmington 57-44 in the first game of the Julie Costello Tournament hosted by Thomas More.

The Lady Quakers from Wilmington established a nine-point lead 5:24 into the game by out-scoring the Belles 13-4 over that stretch.  Saint Mary's would be within nine points of Wilmington midway through the first half, but the Lady Quakers went up by double-digits with 9:18 to go before the half and lead 28-17 at the break.

The Belles would not go away easily, however.  After Wilmington went up 36-21 at 13:03 in the second half, the Belles went on an 11-0 run to cut the lead to 36-32 with just over 10 minutes to go in the game.  The Lady Quakers re-established their double-digit lead, but Saint Mary's was able to come back again late in the game to get within seven points with 1:35 to go.  Wilmington, however, made eight of 10 free throws in the final 1:26 of the game to take the 57-44 win.

Kelley Murphy led Saint Mary's with 21 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.  She also added two blocked shots and three steals in the loss.  Patsy Mahoney added nine points as the Belles were held to their lowest scoring output since they lost 54-44 to Anderson University on November 20, 2007.

Since 1980, no Saint Mary's basketball team had started the season 4-0 until this year.  With their 4-1 mark, they match the 86-87, 88-89, and 89-90 squads for the best record through five games since 1980.

The Belles will look to regain momentum and move to 5-1 on the year when they face off against Otterbein at 2:00 p.m. in the second day of Thomas More College's Julie Costello Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
