Commencement FAQs

What happens if it rains?
In the event of rain, the ceremony will move to Angela Athletic & Wellness Complex, and rain tickets will be required with limited seating. Each graduate is alloted five (5) tickets to distribute to their guests for an indoor ceremony. These tickets will be distributed to the graduating seniors in the week prior to commencement.
If the decision is made to move commencement indoors, it will be announced to the campus community via email, social media, and the College website.

A live broadcast of Saint Mary's commencement may be viewed on the web. The simulcast is also shown on campus in O'Laughlin Auditorium, Moreau Center for the Arts, starting at 12 pm (noon) on Saturday, May 16 for those who don't have commencement rain tickets but are in town to celebrate graduation.

My elderly relatives are going to attend. Does Saint Mary's provide seating and parking for people with mobility needs?
The College offers accommodations for guests with mobility needs. Please contact the Office of the President with requests for seating and additional information at (574) 284-4603.

Where can I find out about wheelchair accessibility on campus?
Visit the campus map with accessibility areas marked.

Is there an indoor location where guests can watch the ceremony?
Yes. The ceremony will be available via live broadcast indoors — rain or shine — on a large screen in O'Laughlin Auditorium in Moreau Center for the Arts.

I'm coming from out of town. Where can I locate information about area lodging and meals?
You can find information at Visit South Bend - Places to Stay.

Is there housing available on campus commencement weekend?
Yes, residence hall rooms are available for rent. The rooms are $75 per-night for a single; $85 per-night for a double; and $95 per-night for a triple. To reserve on-campus accomodations, please complete our Commencement Housing Form for each room you wish to reserve. Reservations and full payment must be received by Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

Can I wear stoles, medals, and honor cords, and decorate my cap, for Saturday's commencement ceremony?
Approved stoles given by Saint Mary's organizations are permitted at the Baccalaureate Liturgy and Honors Convocation, in addition to Saint Mary's medals and honor cords. For a list of approved stoles visit the Stoles and Honor Cords page. For the Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, the graduate may wear one cord and one stole plus any medals awarded. Caps are to remain undecorated.

Stoles, medals, and honor cords are also permitted at Baccalaureate Mass and Honors Convocation.

Where do I get my cap and gown?
Regalia may be purchased at the Saint Mary’s College Shaheen Bookstore. The average cost of cap, gown, tassel and hood is between $65 for undergraduates and $127 for doctoral degrees.

How do I order announcements?
Announcements may be ordered directly through Balfour’s website.

Graduates are encouraged to attend the Graduation Fair on Wednesday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Rice Commons. This is an opportunity to get information on commencement essentials and connect with the Saint Mary's Alumnae Association and additional campus departments before the end of the academic year.

At the Graduation Fair, Balfour representatives will assist with ring purchases and cleanings as well as commencement announcement orders.
