2014 Cross Country Outlook
Powered by a core of underclass contributors last fall, the 2014 Saint Mary’s cross country team looks to be one of the top contenders in the MIAA again this season.
Three runners who scored in both the MIAA Jamboree and MIAA Championship races to help anchor the team’s third place finish a year ago return in 2014. Brittany Beeler ’17, Allie Danhof ’16, and Katelyn Dunn ’16 all made strong contributions to the team’s successes last fall.
Beeler made an immediate impact on the team in her first year in a Saint Mary’s uniform. She was the Belles’ second scoring runner all season behind only All-MIAA and All-Region performer Jessica Biek ’14. Danhof and Dunn showed continued improvement over the season as the pair combined to post seven new personal record times during their sophomore campaigns. Danhof was the third scoring runner for the Belles in five races while Dunn finished among the top five Belles in five races, including the NCAA Division III Regional race.
Samee Chittenden ’15, Erin Knauf ’15, Kathryn Marshall ’17, and Kaitlyn Alessi ’17 were consistent contributors to the team a season ago and will be looked upon for their experience in pacing the Belles in 2014. Chittenden and Knauf were both team top-five finishers at the NCAA Regional race a season ago. Marshall was a scoring runner for the Belles twice last year while Alessi was one of seven team members to compete in the NCAA Regional race in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Complemented with a solid group of newcomers, the Belles cross country team aims to finish among the top tier of MIAA programs in 2014. Saint Mary’s opens their season at the Wabash Hokum Karem race on Saturday, August 30. The Belles compete in the MIAA Jamboree at Kalamazoo on September 27 before trying to lock in another top-three finish in the conference at the MIAA Championship at Calvin on November 1.
