Belles Eighth at Knight Invitational
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Saint Mary's cross country team had several impressive individual times recorded as the Belles finished eighth overall in the talent-laden Knight Invitational hosted by Calvin.
The #15 nationally ranked Knights finished first with a 39, followed by #14 ranked Ohio Northern (69) and NAIA #21 Aquinas (121). The Belles claimed eighth place with a team score of 208 while finishing ahead of conference foes Adrian and Alma.
Joanne Almond had a highly impressive performance for the Belles on Saturday. The junior smashed her previous 5k personal record of 20:10 at last fall's MIAA Jamboree by 45 seconds with a 19:25 to be the first Belle to cross the finish line. The time was the 27th fastest time of the day and was good enough for 23rd place.
Julia Kenney was six seconds behind her 5k PR as she was also below the 20 minute mark with a 19:50 (32nd).
Catie Salyer, Emma Baker, and Sam Wassel all finished within 17 seconds of each other to wrap up the team scoring. Salyer was less than two seconds off of her PR that she set at the same race last fall as she finished in 20:16 (46th). Baker, meanwhile, joined Almond with a PR with a time of 20:25 (51st). Wassel looked to be in mid-season form in just the second race of the fall as she crossed the finish line in 20:33 (56th).
Kristy Kucharski (20:49 - 65th) and Lauren Easton (20:50 - 66th) were the sixth and seventh finishers for the Belles on the morning as Saint Mary's had 11 total runners finish in less than 22 minutes.
The Belles will travel to Marshall, Michigan for the MIAA Jamboree next weekend, which will be hosted by Olivet College at the Olivet Golf Club.
