Social Work has always been a part of my life in one way or another. I wasn’t expecting to go into Social Work when I first arrived at SMC, and the Social Work program here at SMC fell into my lap and I’m so glad it did;... it is such a natural fit for me, I don’t know how I didn’t think of it in the first place. I knew I wanted to help others, but my original plan took me a completely different route that didn’t necessarily fit me. Finding Social Work was the best thing that happened to me; I know that what I’m doing and how I’m going about it is so much more meaningful and is going to make an impact in someone’s life and in the world in general, and in turn has benefitting me in so many ways. The program, professors, and my fellow students here at SMC make this program what it is: AMAZING, and I’m so happy to be a part of something so much bigger than myself.

I want to be a Social Worker because I am passionate about helping to improve the quality of life of individuals as well as that of larger groups and communities. I feel that Social Workers have the opportunity to work direc...tly with clients to provide services that aim to positively impact their lives. I also have a great respect for the values outlined in the National Association of Social Worker’s Code of Ethics: service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity, and competence. I believe that by maintaining these values, and all other guidelines in NASW’s code of ethics, I can become the social worker that I have always wanted to be.

I want to be a social worker because, for whatever reason, I got to be one of the lucky ones in this world. One of the lucky ones who has parents that hugged me, that helped me with my homework, that drove me school, and, m...ost of all, loved me. But I know not everyone is as lucky as me. That is why I want to be a social worker. To do what I can to help lighten the burden of those who are not as lucky but, without a doubt, deserve to be. So that maybe one day their children will be the ones saying that they are the lucky ones.
