Elementary Education Requirements

The Education Department offers the elementary education major with grades K-6 licensure.

Major in Elementary Education with Licensure 

  • EDUC 201, 213, 215, 220, 230, 240, 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, 308, 352, 406, and 472
  • HIST 103 or 104
  • HIST 201
  • MATH 118 and 302

Indiana licensing standards require that candidates pursuing the elementary education teaching license complete requirements for an add-on licensure or minor area.  There are four options within the Education Department:  Mild Intervention, Reading, English as a Second Language/Bilingual Bicultural Education, and Early Childhood Education (see course listings below).  The following are options for College minors that fulfill this requirement:  Art, Chemistry, Economics, English Literature, English Writing, History, Life Science, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Music, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology (see course listings within respective departments).

Major in Elementary Education with Mild Intervention Licensure (K-6)

    In addition to the elementary education requirements, all the following are required:

  •     EDUC 362, 365, 368, 434, 471 (replaces 472)

Major in Elementary Education with Reading Licensure (P-12)

     In addition to the elementary education requirements, all of the following are required:

  •     EDUC 306, 404, 481, 486

*Major in Elementary Education with Minor or Licensure in English as a Second Language/Bilingual Bicultural Education (P-12)

       In addition to the elementary education requirements, all of the following are required:

  • EDUC 430, 432, ENLT 304, and one of the following:  ANTH 141, ANTH 253, COMM 350, ICS 201
  • If P-12 licensure is sought, student teaching is required (EDUC 477 which replaces 472).

*Major in Elementary Education with Minor in Early Childhood Education

This is a College minor, not a licensure program.  If taken along with the elementary education requirements, the following additional courses must be taken:

  • EDUC 310, 311, 480, 485

*Reading, ESL/BBE, and Early Childhood are College minors.  If a student outside of the Education Department chooses to pursue these minors, EDUC 201 must also be taken as a prerequisite to all minor courses.
