Emma Payne '13 is a true nature enthusiast. A Pennsylvania native, the sophomore grew up on Lake Erie, surrounded by the beauty of the environment.

Her passion for nature has only increased throughout her college career, thanks to Saint Mary’s academic opportunities and program offerings.

The ambitious sophomore is double majoring in art and philosophy, but hopes to incorporate her enthusiasm for the environment into her education as well. She is involved in the College’s Environmental Studies Program and intends to minor in the field.

Emma knew that she found her perfect match at Saint Mary’s the first time she visited campus. She accompanied her older sister on visits to other colleges, so she knew what to look for when selecting a school. Saint Mary’s scenic campus, small class sizes, and familial atmosphere were all desirable features.

“As soon as I stepped on Saint Mary’s campus, I knew I had made my choice, so I applied early decision, and here I am,” says Emma.

In addition to her environmental efforts, Emma has a variety of other interests. Although she did not study abroad, she is eager to travel the world and would love to spend time in the United Kingdom.

After Saint Mary’s, Emma plans to attend law school to pursue environmental law. She hopes to incorporate all of her interests – art, philosophy, and nature – into a joint environmental lawyer and activist role.

“I want to make a difference, and inspire others to do the same. Any career which allows me to pursue my goal of change things for the better is the job I dream of having,” Emma says.

Her key career objectives include the spread of issue awareness and the involvement of American youth in green living campaigns.

Apart from her academic studies, Emma is also involved around campus. “I work as a teaching assistant in Moreau,” she says. “That’s where I’m most often found!”
