Poised Under Pressure

Writing enthusiast Alicia Smith has found her niche at Saint Mary’s. This Huntington, Ind., native enjoys not only the daily assignments in her writing courses, but also the articles she writes for The Observer, a newspaper serving the Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame Community. The communication and English writing major loves to share stories through her writing. “I love to write. It’s my passion. I love to tell stories,” says Alicia. “Whether it’s a five page exposition analyzing the work of a famous author or writing about the news on campus, I enjoy every second of it.”

In addition to writing for The Observer and her tough academic schedule, the sophomore enjoyed a variety of activities throughout her first and second year. She not only wrote for the paper, but helped produce it as well as serving as the production editor for the news section. She also worked in the Cushwa-Leighton Library at the circulation desk.

Alicia hopes to work as a journalist after she finishes her education. While she remains at Saint Mary’s, she works diligently to perfect her skills not only as an excellent writer, but as a great communicator as well. “I hope to write for a newspaper after college. The Observer is a great start. It’s a very professional paper, and I really love spending time working on it,” says Alicia. “I enjoy every minute that I spend working on the paper. I love writing for it, designing it, and I love the smell of newsprint on my fingers. It’s incomparable. While I do my job there, I have the opportunity to meet many new faces. There is nothing better than being able to write the stories of different people—to draw a little picture of their lives and share it with the world.”
