2013 Fall Recap
Under the guidance of first year head coach Kim Moore, the Saint Mary’s golf team secured a second place finish in the MIAA during their fall season in 2013.
After opening up the season with a third place finish at the Olivet Labor Day Tee-Off Tournament, the Belles moved up two spots from day one to day two in their own O’Brien National Invitational to claim fifth place in the highly competitive tournament.
In each of the four regular season MIAA Jamborees, the team secured second place finishes. Their 329 at Trine’s jamboree hosted at Zollner Golf Course was just nine strokes behind eventual conference champion Olivet while giving Saint Mary’s some distance between themselves and the rest of the field for second place heading into the final weekend of play. Ali Mahoney and Paige Pollak both posted scores in the 70s marking the first time the Belles had a pair of golfers shoot sub-80 rounds in the same fall conference jamboree since the fall of 2009.
In the final round of the season, the team put up their best score of the season with a 327 at the second day of the MIAA End of Season Weekend Jamboree at Bedford Valley. Janice Heffernan shot the lowest round of the day with a 75, which marked the fifth-lowest score in a conference competition in program history.
The end of season conference awards were also named at the end of the weekend jamboree at Bedford Valley. Alexi Bown became the second Saint Mary's golfer to be recognized with the Sportsmanship Award. Paige Pollak and Janice Heffernan both earned All-MIAA First Team honors while Ali Mahoney earned a spot on the All-MIAA Second Team. Since 1999, 28 different Saint Mary's golfers have earned either All-MIAA First or Second Team accolades a total of 44 times.
The Belles earned their way back into the NGCA Coaches Top 25 poll as they bumped up from 24th to 23rd in the October 16 poll before falling just outside the top 25 in the final poll in December.
The team returns to action on Spring Break when they will travel to Daytona Beach, Florida, to compete in the SMSU Spring Invitational at the LPGA International Golf Course.
