2014 Fall Recap
The Saint Mary’s golf team claimed a third place finish in the final MIAA standings and will compete for a chance to earn the conference’s automatic qualifying bid to the 2015 NCAA Division III Championship tournament next spring.
That journey toward securing a top-four finish in the conference this past fall started with three non-conference tournaments for the Belles. Saint Mary’s claimed a third place finish at the Olivet Labor Day Tee-Off Tournament as Janice Heffernan finished in the top five individually to earn all-tournament honors. The team then had the opportunity to play against some of the top teams in the nation at the O’Brien National Invitational and DePauw Small College Classic with the Belles placing tenth and tied for 13th, respectively.
Once the conference portion of the schedule started in mid-September, the Belles were a constant threat by finishing in the top four at each MIAA round of play. The team’s best score of the season came at the second MIAA Jamboree, which was hosted by Alma at Pine River Country Club in September. The four counting scores for the Belles were 85 and under as Saint Mary’s was just six strokes off of first place with a 324.
The team concluded their season with back-to-back third place finishes at the MIAA End of Season Weekend Jamboree at the Bedford Valley Golf Club. Janice Heffernan secured a spot on the All-MIAA First Team for the second year in-a-row as the senior was among the top six golfers in the league based on her scores this season. Ali Mahoney, meanwhile, ended the conference season with one of the twelve-lowest season scores for a spot on the All-MIAA Second Team for the second consecutive season.
In addition to her All-MIAA First Team recognition, Heffernan was selected as the MIAA Golfer of the Week twice during the fall, becoming just the second golfer in the history of the program to be named a conference golfer of the week multiple times in the same season.
