Belles Set Records at Third MIAA Jamboree
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The #2/#4 nationally ranked Saint Mary's College golf team took first place at the third of four MIAA Jamborees with a 325 on Thursday.
The Belles, who are ranked #2 by Golfstat.com and #4 by the National Golf Coaches Association, edged conference foe Olivet by four strokes and finished 23 strokes ahead of third place Hope. The 325 posted by the Belles is the best round by an MIAA team at Kalamazoo's home course at Milham Park Golf Course. The previous best was 335 shot by Olivet in 2007.
Martyna Mierzwa was the medalist for the second time in the MIAA Jamborees and the fourth time this fall with a 74. The low round of 74 ties a Saint Mary's school record for best 18-hole MIAA round (Stefanie Simmerman, Sept. 25, 2004) while also tying an MIAA record for the best 18-hole performance in conference play set by five other golfers. The score at Milham Park is also the best individual MIAA round at the course, edging the previous best of 76 by Saint Mary's Katie O'Brien in 2007.
Natalie Matuszak continued her strong MIAA sophomore campaign with an 82 on Thursday to tie for third place. Mary Kate Boyce was just two shots behind Matuszak with an 84, which gave her a share of sixth place. Right on Boyce's heels was Rosie O'Connor, who had an 85 for 10th place. Perri Hamma rounded out the top five for the Belles with an 87 (t-13th).
The Belles will host the final MIAA Jamboree of the fall season on Saturday at Blackthorn Golf Club with the round beginning at 1:00 p.m.
