Belles Finish Second at First MIAA NCAA Qualifier
MARSHALL, Mich. - The #5 Saint Mary's golf team shot a 333 to finish second in the first of three MIAA NCAA qualifying rounds.
The first round was played at the Medalist Golf Club and was hosted by #9 Olivet, who won the event by five strokes over the Belles with a 328. Hope finished third with a 336 in a closely-played round. The Comets' Lauren Campbell was the medalist at the event with a two-over 75.
The Belles were led by Natalie Matuszak, who fired a 77 to finish second overall. Mary Kate Boyce finished second for Saint Mary's and tied for fifth overall with an 82. Christine Brown had a strong day as she shot an 86 to share ninth place honors.
Rosie O'Connor rounded out the scoring for Saint Mary's with an 88 to tie for 12th. Perri Hamma was the fifth scoring-eligible golfer for the Belles in the round and shot a 93 to tie for 20th.
Saint Mary's will have two opportunities to gain ground on the Comets when they host the second and third MIAA NCAA qualifying rounds next Friday and Saturday. The team with the lowest score after the three rounds will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Championships in May.
Before that, the Belles will travel to Normal, Illinois, this weekend for the Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling, which will be played Saturday and Sunday at the Ironwood Golf Course.
