Belles in Third at Fall Preview
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The #5 Saint Mary's golf team is currently in third place at the 2010 Fall Preview hosted by Oglethorpe University at the Mission Inn Resort.
The #1 ranked Methodist University Monarchs are sitting in first place after shooting a 324. Illinois Wesleyan, who entered the tournament ranked #10 in Division III, is in second place after a 338 on Sunday. The Belles, meanwhile, are well within striking distance of second as they had a 341 in the first of two days of competition. Birmingham-Southern (#16), Allegheny (#9), and Rhodes (receiving votes) are tied for fourth just two strokes behind Saint Mary's with rounds of 343.
Methodist's Jennifer Sullivan shot the lowest round of the day as she turned in a 78, as did teammate Taylor Dominguez, who was playing as an individual for the Monarchs.
Marin Beagley and Rosie O'Connor had the low rounds of the day for Saint Mary's. The pair both shot rounds of 84 to each hold a share of 12th place. Mary Kate Boyce was just one stroke behind Beagley and O'Connor as she shot an 85 (t-15th). Doyle O'Brien, meanwhile, shot an 88 (t-27th) to wrap up the 341. Megan Ryan was the Belles' fifth golfer, and the junior shot a 95 (43rd).
Saint Mary's had the best par four scoring of all teams on the day. The Belles also made the second-most pars behind only Methodist on Sunday.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow afternoon.
The Mission Inn Resort's El Campeon golf course was the site of the 2010 Division III Women's Golf Championships and will be the site of the 2011 tournament as well. The 2010 Fall Preview includes six teams ranked in the Division II top 25, three schools receiving votes in the pre-season poll, and one school who is reclassifying from NAIA to NCAA Division III.
