HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The #5 Saint Mary's golf team finished third at the 2010 Fall Preview hosted by Oglethorpe University at the Mission Inn Resort.
The Belles shot a 338 on day two to finish with a 679 in the tournament for third place. The #1 and 13-time defending national champions from Methodist University continued their unbeaten streak as they took first place with a 651. Tenth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan finished second with a 665. Methodist's Paige Caldwell continued to assert herself as one of the top golfers in Division III as she shot a 76 on Monday to earn medalist honors with a two-day low of 156.
Mary Kate Boyce led the way for Saint Mary's yet again. The senior finished in fourth place overall with an 80 on Monday (85-80--165) while turning in the most pars made of any player in the field. Marin Beagley notched another 84 on day two to tie for ninth place. She also was tied for third in par three scoring in the tournament with two other golfers.
Doyle O'Brien shaved four strokes off of her Sunday score to finish with an 84 on Monday to tie for 22nd. Rosie O'Connor shot a 90 (t-25th) to tie up the 338 and secure third place. Megan Ryan, meanwhile, shot a 105 as the Belles' fifth golfer in the tournament.
Saint Mary's looks to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the MIAA this week as they travel to the final two MIAA Jamborees of the fall season. The Belles will go to Olivet on Wednesday and then head to Adrian on Saturday in the final rounds before the MIAA Championships October 8-9.
