Belles Finish Sixth at Stacked Spring Fling
NORMAL, Ill. - The #12 Saint Mary's golf team finished sixth out of twenty teams with a 334 at the talent-laden Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling on Sunday.
In a tournament loaded with nationally ranked teams, #15 North Central won the weather-shortened tournament with a 315 while NAIA #8 William Woods finished second with a 319. Also finishing ahead of Saint Mary's were #2 DePauw (320), #4 Wisconsin-Eau Claire (320), and conference rival #18 Olivet (321). The individual medalist of the tournament was Olivet's Amber Conrad, who shot a two-over 74 for the Comets.
On the flip side, the Belles finished ahead of #7 Centre, #8 Illinois Wesleyan, #17 Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a handful of teams receiving votes in both NCAA Division II, III, and NAIA polls.
Leading the Belles on Sunday was Mary Kate Boyce. The senior shot an 81 for a share of 16th in a field of more than 100 golfers. Right behind Boyce was Marin Beagley, who carded an 82 to tie for 24th individually.
Natalie Matuszak, Doyle O'Brien, and Rosie O'Connor all finished within two strokes of each other on Sunday. Matuszak shot an 85 (t-42nd), O'Brien had an 86 (t-48th), and O'Connor turned in an 87 (t-53rd).
Christine Brown, who competed as an individual, shot an 88 (t-58th).
The Belles will now focus on their final two rounds of the regular season. Saint Mary's will host the second and third rounds of the MIAA's three-part NCAA Spring qualifying rounds on April 29 and 30. The conference team with the lowest three-round score will receive the conference's automatic bid to the 2011 NCAA Championships, and the Belles trail Olivet by 12 strokes.
