Belles in Second After Round One of Qualifier

MARSHALL, Mich. - The #12 Saint Mary's golf team shot a 333 and is currently in second place behind Olivet after the first of three MIAA NCAA Qualifier rounds.

Olivet, who is ranked #18 in all of Division III women's golf, scored three 80s and an 81 on their way to a 321 and the lead in the hunt for the conference's automatic qualifying bid to the NCAA Championships this spring. Hope sits in third after a round of 347.

The Belles were led by junior Natalie Matuszak's 81. Matuszak had nine pars on the day as she finished tied for fourth. Rosie O'Connor had the best back-nine score of the day (37) along with 10 pars on her way to an 83 an a share of seventh.

Mary Kate Boyce, Doyle O'Brien, and Marin Beagley all finished within two strokes of one another for the Belles on Thursday. Boyce had an 84 to tie for ninth place, O'Brien had a pair of birdies as she shot an 85 (11th), and Beagley carded an 86 with eight pars and a share of 12th place for the Belles.

Christine Brown (88), Jessica Kinnick (89), Cara Kielty (92), and Alexi Bown (95) all played as individuals on the day.

The MIAA's automatic qualifying (AQ) bid will go to the team with the lowest cumulative score at the end of three 18-hole rounds this spring. With Olivet having hosted today's round, Saint Mary's will host the second and third rounds later this month. The Belles will look to earn the conference's AQ spot when they host the rest of the league on April 29 and 30 at South Bend's Blackthorn Golf Club.

This weekend, however, the Belles will participate in the highly-competitive Illinois Wesleyan Spring Fling along with #2 DePauw and #8 Illinois Wesleyan among the field of teams at the tournament.
