Belles Sit in Fourth at O'Brien National Invitational
NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The #5 nationally ranked Saint Mary's golf team currently holds fourth place at the second annual O'Brien National Invitational.
In a tournament laden with nationally recognized talent, the Belles fired a 324 on the first day of the two-day event, which Saint Mary's is hosting at the Warren Golf Course at the University of Notre Dame. The 13-time defending NCAA Division III women's golf champion and #1 nationally ranked Methodist University holds a slim lead over the field. The Monarchs shot a 316 and hold a one-stroke lead over #4 ranked DePauw (317) and a two-stroke lead over #3 Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Saint Mary's, meanwhile, holds a narrow lead over #2 Gustavus Adolphus (327) and #13 Centre (328).
The Belles' own Marin Beagley shot the low round of the day. The freshman had a tournament-best 33 on the front nine and wrapped up a 41 on the back nine for a 74 (+2). Two players shot 75s as eleven golfers shot rounds below 80.
Mary Kate Boyce narrowly missed out on joining that group of sub-80 scores as the senior shot 80 on the nose (40-40) for a share of 12th. Freshmen Doyle O'Brien and Paige Pollak helped the Belles with their push toward the top as the shot 84 (t-26th) and 86 (t-36th), respectively. Rosie O'Connor was the fifth scoring-eligible golfer for the Belles, shooting a 90 on the day (t-49th).
Jessica Kinnick led a group of five Saint Mary's golfers playing as individuals. The sophomore had an 85 to tie for 28th.
One of the most competitive golf tournaments other than the NCAA Championships, the field at the event is made up of teams that finished in the top 11 at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships. Each team in the field is currently ranked in the top 13 of NCAA Division III women's golf. The second and final round will begin tomorrow morning at approximately 8:15 a.m.
