Belles Fall in Season Opener to Hornets

HILTON HEAD, S.C. - The Saint Mary's lacrosse team lost a 13-5 contest against Shenandoah in the 2016 season opener on Monday.
Shenandoah tallied the opening three goals of the game before Clare Theisen put the Belles on the scoreboard in the first half of play. Kate Kelly then came up with a response goal a few minutes later to make it a 4-2 game. The Hornets were able to extend their lead to 6-2, but Theisen registered her second goal of the game to end the first half scoring to make it 6-3 at the break.
The Hornets, however, posted three goals to open the second period and make it a 9-3 contest. Kelly netted her second goal of the game midway through the second half, and Emilie Vanneste struck late in the game, but it was not enough for the Belles in the 13-5 final.
Clare Theisen and Kate Kelly tallied two goals each for the Belles while Emilie Vanneste notched a goal. Shannon Weyer made 11 saves in goal for the Belles. Theisen led the team with six ground balls while Katlynn Dee picked up five ground balls. (Note that some statistics are still subject to change.)
The Belles (0-1) return to action tomorrow when they face off against Elms at 1:00 p.m.
