Saint Mary’s College hosts 'Get Inked' Teen Writing Conference

October 6, 2016 (Notre Dame, Ind.) — The Saint Mary’s College Department of Education and Michiana Writers’ Center is proud to sponsor “Get Inked,” a teen writing conference for students in grades 8-12 on Saturday, November 5. The event will last from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and activities will take place in Madeleva Hall, beginning in Carroll Auditorium. The daylong event costs $50 per student. Interactive workshops and insights from experienced and published writers will provide students with tips to keep their writing interesting. Barb Shoup, the author of eight novels, will be the keynote speaker of the event, and will also work with small groups of writers.

Shoup has taught creative writing to high school students for more than twenty years and is the recipient of numerous grants from the Indiana Arts Council, two creative renewal grants from the Arts Council of Indianapolis, the 2006 PEN Phyllis Reynolds Naylor Working Writer Fellowship and the 2012 Eugene and Marilyn Glick Regional Indiana Author Award.

The conference is designed for novice and proficient student writers to find inspiration and useful strategies for their personal and school-related writing. Students are encouraged to register soon since space is limited. Those who sign up by Saturday, October 15 will be given preference. Teachers are welcome to attend, free of charge, 8:00-11:30 a.m. They will be able to hear the keynote speech, participate in a writer’s marathon, and attend a breakout session for writing ideas to use in their classrooms. Teachers are invited to RSVP at michianawriterscenter@gmail.com.
