Secondary Education Requirements
The Education Department offers a minor in Secondary Education. Students completing this minor will have completed all requirements to be licensed in grades 5-12.
Saint Mary's students planning to complete the Secondary Education minor must have a major or complete the approved coursework in one of the following content disciplines approved for Saint Mary's College: English; modern languages (French, Spanish); mathematics; science (science majors must complete licensing requirements in one of the following areas: chemistry, life science); history (history majors must complete additional course work in political science and may choose one of the following: sociology, psychology, economics); political science (political science majors must complete additional course work in history and may choose one of the following: sociology, psychology, economics).
Notre Dame students planning to complete the Secondary Education minor must have a major or complete the approved coursework in one of the following content disciplines approved for the University of Notre Dame: English; foreign languages (French, Latin, German, Spanish); mathematics; science (chemistry, life science); history (history majors must complete additional course work in political science and may choose one of the following: sociology, psychology, economics); political science (political science majors must complete additional course work in history and may choose one of the following: sociology, psychology, economics).
Minor in Secondary Education
- EDUC 201, 220, 345, 346, 350, 356, 474 or 475.
- one of the following: EDUC 443, 445, 447, 449, 451
*Minor or Licensure in English as a Second Language/Bilingual Bicultural Education
In addition to course requirements for the secondary education minor, the following courses must be taken:
- EDUC 430, 432, ENLT 304, and one of the following: ANTH 141, ANTH 253, COMM 350, or ICS 201.
- If the licensure is being sought, student teaching (EDUC 478 which replaces EDUC 474/475) is required.
*ESL/BBE is a College minor. Students outside of the Education Department who choose to pursue this minor must also take EDUC 201 as a prerequisite to all minor courses.
